Are you or a loved one struggling with addiction? Call us at 541.504.9577

Addiction begins as a choice and evolves into a disease. People can become addicted to substances like alcohol or drugs that alter the chemical balance of the brain, or they can become addicted to behaviors like gambling. Addictions create a loss of control and feelings of guilt, despair, failure and depression.

How Addiction Starts

An addiction can develop quickly or over a period of years. It can be the result of trauma, a form of self-medicating for pain, or an occasional habit that becomes a daily fix. Where some people can stop using a substance by choice, others are unable to stop using no matter how much they want to or how much damage it’s doing to their lives. Some people also have a higher genetic disposition to addiction.

How addiction EVOLVES

Addiction can evolve as a coping mechanism. When faced with stress, people use or behave in excess to simply get by. They continue to use or engage in the behavior despite the severe negative consequences happening in their lives or to the ones they love. Addiction often comes from an increased tolerance, meaning you need more of the substance or behavior more frequently to feel the same effects as before. Eventually, you lose the ability to feel those effects, and instead keep using because the withdrawal symptoms are uncomfortable or even painful.

Symptoms Of Addiction

Millions of Americans suffer from some sort of substance abuse or addictive behaviors. Alcohol, marijuana, prescription drugs, cocaine, methamphetamine and other highly addictive habits like gambling have the power to affect your relationships, your job, your future and your health. Addiction is not a failing; it’s a disease. And it’s one we can face together.

You may be suffering from alcohol and substance abuse if you’ve recently experienced any of the following symptoms:
• Drinking more or longer than you originally planned
• Tried to cut down or stop on your own but couldn’t
• Getting sick after drinking or getting high
• A constant craving to drink or use when sober
• Drinking, drug use or sickness from use has begun to interfere with family, work, school or other social responsibilities
• Given up other activities in order to drink or get high
• Getting into situations when drinking or drug use that can cause harm to you or others, like driving, fighting or unsafe sex
• Continued to drink or use drugs despite feelings of depression, anxiety or other health problems
• Having to drink, use more or move on to more powerful substances than before to get the same effect
• Withdrawal symptoms when sober like trouble sleeping, shakiness, irritability, anxiety, depression, restlessness, nausea, or sweating

You may be suffering from behavioral addiction such as gambling if you’ve recently experienced any of the following symptoms

  • Gambling more or longer than you originally planned
  • Tried to cut down or stop on your own but couldn’t
  • Needing to be secretive about your behavior
  • A constant craving to indulge in the behavior despite the negative circumstances
  • The behavior has begun to interfere with family, work, school or other social responsibilities
  • Given up other activities in order to continue the habit
  • Continuing the habit even when you can’t financially afford to

Maybe you’ve tried to stop in creative ways, like limiting the number of drinks, never smoking alone, no drinking in the morning, gambling only during a certain time of day, using only at home, never getting high at work or drinking only at parties. Maybe you began moderately, but now lose control over your consumption after one drink, or your habit has progressed from the weekends to daily. No matter what your experience, we’re here to help.

Outpatient Treatment

Retain your freedom while getting help, change unhealthy behavior and find new ways to cope with life pressures. Our outpatient treatment program serves as the first level of addiction treatment and is especially helpful for those who may be facing legal issues resulting from a DUII. It is also used as a follow-up and ongoing support after residential treatment. It typically involves a time commitment of approximately 5 hours (or less) a week. Also offered: The MOMS Program provides support and stigma-free care to pregnant women and women who have recently had babies who struggle with substance use. The MOMS team advocate for women and their families, connect them with needed resources, offer a support group, and fast-track access to treatment if a woman chooses.

Intensive Outpatient Treatment

This treatment program allows you to live off-site and attend groups and classes during the day. Treatment is developed from an ASAM assessment, and is based upon your individual needs including addiction free pain management. Throughout treatment, you’ll have access to our entire medical staff and highly trained and specialized counselors. In addition, you will benefit from other services that we will coordinate for you (including referral source for residential services, if needed). Meals are provided; transportation is the patient’s responsibility.

Medication-assisted Treatment (MAT)

Our Bend, Redmond, and Prineville locations offer FDA-approved medications such as buprenorphine oral product and long acting buprenorphine injections (sublocade) as well as naltrexone oral product and long acting naltrexone injections (vivitrol) which are evidence based in supporting recovery from opiate use disorder and alcohol use disorder. Medications are managed by highly qualified and specially licensed health care providers trained in addiction medicine. Our outpatient MAT program is overseen by a board certified addiction medicine specialist.
MAT is recommended as an adjunct to, not as a substitute for, evidence-based recovery programming. Medications are tools that assist people as a component of their recovery.

Challenges of Detox

The human body’s chemistry, biology, and functioning change when an individual uses an addictive substance. The body adjusts to the recurrent ingestion of these chemicals, on all levels, compromising natural homeostasis. When an individual removes such a substance from their body and ceases ingestion, the body begins the process of reverting back to normal, healthy functioning.

Through this process, the individual may experience discomfort, pain, psychological irregularity, and strong emotions.

Treatment Approaches

As described above,  treatment is individualized; therefore the length of stay and treatment approaches will vary. Brooks Detox provides highly trained nursing and physician oversight to ensure detoxification is safely monitored. Brooks also provides a variety of Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) options to promote an improved detoxification experience and success.

Dual Diagnosis

When substance abuse is driven by an underlying or co-occurring mental health disorder, such as bipolar disorder, depression or anxiety, a dual diagnosis-based program is indicated to treat both the addiction issues and the underlying disorder at the same time. Our Redmond residential program is designated as a dual diagnosis facility. Our primary treatment model is focused on addiction, with secondary co-occurring treatment of mental health disorders. We have clinically trained medical staff, including behavioral and mental health counselors, not to mention mentors who have struggled with similar issues here to help day or night.

For more on our dual diagnosis and residential treatment, contact us at 541.504.9577. Please be prepared to provide additional information including a mental health evaluation or current diagnosis, a list of medications and how long each medication has been taken, as well as other information related to your care.

Our program in Madras also provides dual diagnosis services on an outpatient basis for clients living in Jefferson County.

Please contact our offices at 541.475.6575 for help in setting up an appointment.

PAIN MANAGEMENT

Many people use alcohol and drugs as a form of pain management, doing more harm than good in the process. As part of our treatment plan, we introduce you to non-pharmacological approaches to pain management so you can develop a clean lifestyle that supports your long-term goals.

Chronic pain can be managed without medication through our holistic treatment, which includes an anti-inflammation diet, mindfulness training, acupuncture, massage and moderate exercise. Our support staff is here to help you treat both your addiction and the underlying pain that may be causing you to abuse substances in the first place. Our pain management specialists can work hand-in-hand with your doctor or pain management provider to coordinate your treatment with their care. Pain management services are offered specifically through our Bend Outpatient and Redmond Residential locations.
